Green Climate Fund
A multilateral fund founded in 2010 that finances climate mitigation and adaptation projects in developing countries through readiness, project preparation and project funding pathways.
The Green Climate Fund is a multilateral fund established in 2010 to help developing countries respond to climate change. It invests in low-emission, climate-resilient development pathways, financing both mitigation and adaptation across a global portfolio of projects spanning multiple sectors and developing countries worldwide. Its work is carried out in partnership with governments, accredited organisations, public and private investors, and civil society.
The Fund operates three funding pathways: Readiness and Preparatory Support, which helps countries prepare to access and manage climate finance; Project Preparation Support, which supports the preparation of climate projects; and Project Funding, which provides options suited to projects of different sizes and levels of risk. Technical work covers climate change mitigation and adaptation, climate finance, low-emission development pathways, climate-resilient development, project preparation and funding structuring, and readiness support. Projects reach across health, food and water security, ecosystems, energy, transport, infrastructure and forests.
The Fund states that its work is guided by the circumstances and priorities of the countries it serves, with a focus on people and communities particularly vulnerable to climate impacts. It emphasises accountability and transparency, and a commitment to sustainability and inclusion, and works collaboratively with its partner institutions.
