European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

An international financial institution founded in 1991, investing in market-economy transition across nearly 40 economies, with legal, finance, climate and policy work.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is an international financial institution founded in 1991 to support the transition to successful market economies. Headquartered in London, it operates across three continents, with local offices in nearly 40 economies, and has invested over €220 billion in more than 7,800 projects. Its work combines financial expertise with deep regional knowledge to deliver systemic impact. Law sits alongside finance, engineering and policy among the professional disciplines that staff the bank. Legal practitioners work across cross-border investment financing, climate finance and green banking, and the governance questions that arise when the EBRD engages with governments, businesses and civil society. All of the bank's activities are aligned with the Paris Agreement, and sustainability is embedded at the core of its operations, making the EBRD a majority green bank. The institution describes its culture in terms of diversity of thought and international collaboration: staff drawn from dozens of countries bring varied professional perspectives to work conducted across borders. Transparency, accountability, a commitment to multiparty democracy and open dialogue with counterparties are stated operating principles.
