Inter-American Development Bank
Multilateral development bank providing financing and knowledge for Latin America and the Caribbean through public, private and innovation-focused entities.
The Inter-American Development Bank is a multilateral development institution founded in 1959 and headquartered in Washington, D.C. The IDB Group provides development finance and knowledge for Latin America and the Caribbean, an operation that spans sovereign lending, direct private sector investment and support for entrepreneurial innovation. Its membership comprises 48 nations: 26 borrowing member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and 22 non-borrowing members from Asia, Europe and North America.
The Group conducts its work through three entities. IDB, the core bank, works with the region's public sector and enables the private sector through sovereign-guaranteed project financing, approving about $13 billion for 95 such projects in 2024. IDB Invest supports private companies and projects directly through financing and mobilisation, totalling $9.8 billion in 2024. IDB Lab spurs entrepreneurial innovation, approving $107 million for 72 innovation projects over the same period. Total IDB Group financial support in 2024 was approximately $23 billion.
The Group's activities are guided by IDBStrategy+, the institutional strategy covering 2024 to 2030, which focuses on sustainable and inclusive development outcomes. Alongside financing, the Group produces development research and knowledge for the region, and maintains offices across its borrowing member countries as well as a presence in Asia, Europe and North America.
