International Organization for Migration

An intergovernmental organisation in the United Nations System, founded in 1951, that supports migrants and advises on migration policy and practice across 171 countries.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and part of the United Nations System. Established in 1951, it works to promote humane and orderly migration by supporting migrants, responding to changing migration dynamics, and advising governments and partners on migration policy and practice. It counts 174 member states and maintains offices in 171 countries.

IOM's work is organised around three objectives: saving lives and protecting people on the move; driving solutions to displacement; and facilitating pathways for regular migration. Its remit spans humanitarian response to complex emergencies, displacement solutions, and analysis of risks arising from climate change, environmental degradation, conflict and instability. The organisation is focused on people in situations of vulnerability and on strengthening the resilience of people and communities.

Operationally, IOM supports safe, regular and rights-based mobility and advises on migration policy and practice, working with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. For professionals in law and public policy, this places them in a multilateral setting engaged with migration governance, rights-based frameworks, and cross-border cooperation across a global network of country offices.
