Freedom House
Freedom House, founded in 1941, is a nonpartisan nonprofit that researches and monitors democracy, human rights and internet freedom and provides legal and other assistance to at-risk activists.
Freedom House is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organisation founded in 1941 to support and defend democracy and human rights worldwide. It is the oldest American organisation devoted to that purpose. Its work combines research and monitoring with direct assistance to democracy advocates and human rights defenders, including legal representation, trial monitoring, relocation support and life-saving services for activists at risk. The organisation operates across political divides and is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with an office in New York and field offices worldwide.
Its research programmes cover political rights and civil liberties assessment, internet freedom monitoring, democracy and freedom research, and transnational repression. Published since 1973, Freedom in the World is an annual assessment of political rights and civil liberties covering nearly 200 countries and territories. Other publications include Freedom on the Net, which reports on internet freedom globally, Nations in Transit, covering post-Communist reforms in transitional countries, and research on transnational repression.
Freedom House provides direct assistance to democracy advocates and human rights defenders in 150 countries. Its work spans the nonprofit, democracy and governance, human rights, international affairs and internet freedom sectors, and it describes itself as a leading American voice on freedom and democracy issues.
