The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international financial institution owned by central banks, founded in 1930 and headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. It supports central banks in pursuing monetary and financial stability through international cooperation and serves as a bank for central banks. Having operated for over 90 years, the institution functions both as a forum for monetary and financial cooperation and as a research hub for its member institutions.

For those working in law and regulation, the BIS hosts the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which aims to enhance understanding of supervisory issues and improve the quality of banking supervision worldwide, and the Financial Stability Institute, which assists supervisors in strengthening their financial systems. These bodies sit at the centre of international banking standard-setting and supervisory practice, alongside the BIS's work in economic and financial statistics and in monetary and financial stability research.

The institution also maintains the BIS Innovation Hub, which develops public goods in the technology space to support central banks and improve the functioning of the financial system. The Hub maintains centres around the world as part of a global network of central bank experts on innovation, with work spanning financial technology and innovation and central bank digital innovation. The organisation describes its orientation as mission-driven, focused on international cooperation among central banks and on the development of public goods in technology.
