United Nations Population Fund
UNFPA is the United Nations' sexual and reproductive health agency, upholding the rights and choices of women, girls and young people in more than 150 countries.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the United Nations' sexual and reproductive health agency. Its stated purpose is to uphold the rights and choices of women, girls and young people, working towards a world in which every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person can fulfil their potential. The organisation operates in more than 150 countries and maintains global, international operations.
UNFPA's work spans several areas of direct relevance to legal and policy practice: gender equality and human rights; gender-based violence prevention; sexual and reproductive health and family planning; maternal health and midwifery; population data and demographic analysis; and humanitarian and emergency response, including the inclusion of crisis-affected populations. The mandate places rights, choices and non-discrimination at the centre of its programming.
The Fund works collaboratively with governments, partners and communities rather than delivering services in isolation, which means much of its engagement involves intergovernmental cooperation, national policy frameworks and the rights of women, girls and young people in both development and emergency settings. Its technical domains combine demographic evidence with rights-based approaches to health and equality.
