Jerónimo Martins

Food distribution and retail group founded in 1792, running supermarkets, cash & carry, drugstores and food manufacturing joint ventures in Portugal, Poland and Colombia.

Jerónimo Martins is an international food distribution and specialised retail group with a history stretching back to 1792, when a young Galician entrepreneur opened a modest store in Lisbon's Chiado neighbourhood. The group today reports revenues of 18.3 billion euros, employs more than 120,000 people and operates more than 6,500 stores across three countries: Portugal, Poland and Colombia. Its corporate origins and headquarters remain in Lisbon.

The group's activities span food retail, cash & carry wholesale, specialised retail and food service, and extend into food manufacturing through joint ventures. Its operating brands include Biedronka, a supermarket chain in Poland; Pingo Doce, a supermarket chain in Portugal; Recheio, a cash & carry wholesale business in Portugal; Ara, a supermarket chain in Colombia; Hebe, a drugstore chain in Poland; and Jeronymo, a food service and coffee shop brand in Portugal. Manufacturing interests are held through Unilever Jerónimo Martins, a joint venture with Unilever, and Gallo Worldwide, a holding in olive oil manufacturing centred on the Gallo brand.

The group states that its strategy is focused on value creation and sustainable development, with environmental and social considerations incorporated into the management of its value chain. Its stated commitments include promoting health through food, respecting the environment, buying responsibly and supporting surrounding communities. Jerónimo Martins describes its ambition as being a benchmark employer.
