European Court of Human Rights

An international Council of Europe court in Strasbourg that applies the European Convention on Human Rights and rules on individual and State applications alleging violations of Convention rights.

The European Court of Human Rights is an international court of the Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg and established in 1959. It applies the European Convention on Human Rights, ruling on individual and State applications that allege violations of the civil and political rights and guarantees set out in the Convention. Its work covers rights including life, security, freedom of thought and expression, and the right to marry, and prohibitions on torture, slavery and discrimination.

The Court provides a judicial process for claims under the Convention across the Council of Europe's member states, ensuring that States respect the protections the Convention establishes. Applications are examined by the Grand Chamber, Chambers and Committees, depending on the case.

The Court's case-law is published through the HUDOC database, which gives access to the judgments and decisions of the Grand Chamber, Chambers and Committees. Further information is available at https://www.echr.coe.int/.
