RWE

RWE, founded 1898 and headquartered in Essen, Germany, is an energy company producing and supplying electricity across the value chain, spanning renewables, storage, hydrogen and conventional generation.

RWE is an energy company that traces its origins to a local municipal electricity utility founded in 1898 in Essen, Germany, where it remains headquartered. Over more than 125 years it grew into one of Europe's largest power producers and, following a reshaping of its portfolio, into one of the world's leading companies in renewable energy. The company generates and supplies electricity across the value chain, with operations spanning Germany, wider Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

Its business covers both conventional and renewable generation. The legacy portfolio comprises coal and lignite, natural gas and nuclear power, built up over the 20th century. The growing part of the portfolio is offshore and onshore wind, solar power and battery storage, into which RWE invests billions annually; it is also developing green hydrogen and floating offshore wind. In 2018 an asset swap with E.ON transferred international renewable generation assets worth billions to the company. RWE has stated a target of becoming carbon neutral by 2040.

The company operates across the energy and utilities, electricity generation, renewable energy, power production, hydrogen energy and energy storage sectors. Its stated direction is that of a long-standing heritage business in strategic transformation, with an emphasis on sustainability and the global green energy transition.
