The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1957 and headquartered in Vienna, Austria. It serves as the world's central forum for cooperation in the nuclear field, with a mandate covering both the promotion of nuclear technology and the prevention of nuclear weapons proliferation. Its work spans safeguards and verification, nuclear safety and security, and the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear energy - areas that sit at the intersection of international obligations, technical standards and Member State relations.

Founded on the ideals of "Atoms for Peace", the Agency employs approximately 2,500 staff members drawn from over 100 countries and operates with Member States across the globe. The workforce is highly international and multicultural, and the organisation is oriented towards scientific and technical cooperation among its Member States.

Its technical remit is broad, covering nuclear technology and applications, nuclear energy, nuclear medicine and healthcare, agricultural and food security applications, and environmental protection. It also maintains several global information systems, including the Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) and the International Nuclear Information System (INIS), both comprehensive databases on nuclear power and nuclear science and technology respectively, as well as the Incident and Trafficking Database, which tracks incidents and illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive material.
