Broadfield offers training contracts for university students and graduates seeking qualification as solicitors. The firm's early careers programme is designed around early responsibility, structured development and exposure to client work. Trainees are treated as members of their teams and are given meaningful work from the beginning of the training contract.
The Training Contract
Broadfield's London Direct Training Contract 2028 is a two-year programme leading to qualification as a solicitor through the SQE pathway.
Trainees complete four six-month seats across different practice areas. The seat structure is designed to provide broad exposure to legal work and allow trainees to develop experience across different teams and areas of practice.
The available practice areas include:
Commercial Real Estate
Litigation
Energy
Restructuring and Insolvency
Private Real Estate
Private Wealth
Private Equity & Funds
Family
Planning, Infrastructure and Public Law
Corporate
Commercial
Employment
Trainees are normally based in their designated home office. However, there may be a requirement to complete a seat in another Broadfield office where this is necessary to meet business needs and provide a broader training experience.
SQE Training and Sponsorship
Broadfield trainees qualify through the SQE route.
Candidates who have not yet completed their SQE examinations will be sponsored by the firm to undertake a year-long LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) course with the University of Law before joining Broadfield as a trainee.
Broadfield recruits one year in advance, allowing future trainees to complete their SQE examinations before beginning their two-year training contract.
Training and Development
The programme begins with a comprehensive induction. Trainees then receive training through both structured departmental programmes and desk-side mentoring from supervisors.
The training is designed to combine formal development with practical experience. Trainees work with different members of their teams and are exposed to a variety of practice areas and client matters.
Broadfield also offers client secondments to trainees interested in gaining experience working as an in-house lawyer.
Responsibility and Client Exposure
Broadfield's training contracts are structured around early responsibility and significant client exposure.
Trainees are expected to contribute meaningfully to their teams from the outset. The programme provides opportunities to develop client relationships while building the technical, organisational and commercial skills required of a solicitor.
Working across four different teams also allows trainees to experience different styles of legal practice and develop a broader understanding of the firm's work.
Candidate Profile
Broadfield is looking for future trainees who are driven, collaborative and intuitive.
Candidates should be strong communicators who enjoy working as part of a team and are able to think on their feet. The firm also identifies commercial awareness, attention to detail and organisational skills as important qualities.
Eligibility
For a training contract commencing in September 2028, candidates must have completed, or be due to complete before September 2027, one of the following qualifications:
LLB or equivalent law degree
GDL or PGDL
LPC or LLM
SQE1
SQE1 and SQE2
Strong academic performance is expected, ideally at 2:1 level or above at undergraduate and A-Level or equivalent. However, the firm considers mitigating circumstances and states that applicants are not scored based on academic attainment.
Application Process
The recruitment process begins with an online application form. Candidates are asked essay-style questions focusing on their motivation for pursuing a career in law and their reasons for wanting to work at Broadfield.
Candidates may use AI tools to assist with research, structuring or proofreading their applications. However, applications that rely too heavily on AI are unlikely to score well because the assessment focuses on candidates' genuine personal experiences and authentic reflections.
Successful applicants are invited to complete a pre-recorded video interview, providing an opportunity for Broadfield to learn more about the candidate.
The final stage is an in-person assessment centre, held at the end of June at the office to which the candidate applied.
