5 Essex Chambers is a leading public law set based in Gray's Inn, London. Chambers specialises in work for police forces, Government departments and other public authorities, as well as individuals and corporate clients.
Its practice covers a broad range of public and regulatory law, including public and administrative law, police law, civil liberties and human rights, employment, professional discipline and regulation, data protection and information law, healthcare, Court of Protection work, investigations, inquests and inquiries.
Chambers is highly ranked in police law and inquests and inquiries by both Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500. It was named Public Services and Charities Set of the Year at the 2024 Legal 500 Bar Awards.
The Pupillage
5 Essex Chambers offers two 12-month pupillages each year.
The pupillage is structured around three four-month seats, giving pupils the opportunity to experience the full range of Chambers' work rather than spending the entire year in a single specialist practice.
The structure is designed to provide substantial practical experience alongside close supervision and training. Pupils develop their legal research, drafting, analytical and advocacy skills while gaining exposure to different courts, tribunals and types of public and regulatory work.
During the second six, pupils become practising barristers and are able to undertake their own advocacy under the appropriate supervision.
Work During Pupillage
Pupils undertake genuine legal work from an early stage of their pupillage.
The work can include:
Legal research and analysis.
Drafting advices and opinions.
Preparing pleadings and other litigation documents.
Drafting skeleton arguments.
Preparing for hearings.
Attending conferences with solicitors and clients.
Attending court and tribunal hearings.
Assisting with investigations and inquiries.
Appearing in court and representing clients during the second six.
The breadth of Chambers' practice means that pupils can gain experience across public law, regulatory disputes, employment, police work, inquests and other specialist areas.
Advocacy Experience
A significant feature of the pupillage is the opportunity to develop practical advocacy skills.
Pupils are expected to be on their feet during their second six, with experience generally including appearances in the Magistrates' Court, Crown Court, County Court and Coroners' Courts.
This provides pupils with regular opportunities to develop oral advocacy, case preparation, client handling and courtroom judgment.
The range of courts and tribunals reflects the breadth of 5 Essex Chambers' practice and allows pupils to develop advocacy skills across different types of proceedings.
